We have decided not to pursue this for now. Can be reopened (or a new issue opened) if someone wants to work on something like this.

There are now better error messages for missing cmake and make/nmake. If any other requirements are missing, the error messages can still be cryptic, so I'll leave this issue open for now.

We should have nice errors when requirements are missing (e.g., missing cmake, make, nmake, cl, gcc, ...)
