In that case, I think the communicate() approach is fine. I would generally not
do this kind of buffering for anything above a few KB (say, 64 KB).

Given that our policy is not to write on stderr except for final error
reporting, I suggest we set the stderr soft limit in lab drastically lower than
the stdout limit, say at 64 KB. That way, we won't accidentally miss this design
aspect if we ever make a change that leads to much more output on stderr.
